Decay of auditory memory in vowel discrimination.

چکیده

Two experiments on same-different vowel discrimination are reported. In each, the main variable was the duration of a silent delay between the two items being judged. As would be expected from the assumption that such judgements depend at least partly on auditory sensory memory, longer delays led to poorer discrimination than shorter delays. The auditory memory loss seems to be asymptotic at about 3 sec, whether it is measured by correct discrimination of (as in one part of Experiment 2) by the contextual influence of the first vowel on identification of the second.

The Duration of Auditory Sensory Memory for Vowel Processing: Neurophysiological and Behavioral Measures

Speech perception behavioral research suggests that rates of sensory memory decay are dependent on stimulus properties at more than one level (e.g., acoustic level, phonemic level). The neurophysiology of sensory memory decay rate has rarely been examined in the context of speech processing. In a lexical tone study, we showed that long-term memory representation of lexical tone slows the decay ...

Effect of Vowel Auditory Training on the Speech-In-Noise Perception among Older Adults with Normal Hearing

Introduction: Aging reduces the ability to understand speech in noise. Hearing rehabilitation is one of the ways to help older people communicate effectively. This study aimed to investigate the effect of vowel auditory training on the improvement of speech-in-noise (SIN) perception among elderly listeners.   Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 36 elderly ...

The Effectiveness of Storytelling on Improving Auditory Memory of Students with Reading Disabilities in Marivan City, Iran

Background: Students with learning disabilities often encounter problems with their lessons due to the disorder in reading and writing and face to some challenging situation such as auditory and visual memory problem, sustaining attention, inhibiting impulses, motor coordination, auditory and visual perception and discrimination. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of...

Vowel Quality Decay and Perceptual Asymmetries in Light of the Neutralisation Hypothesis

The present paper consists in replicating Repp and Crowder’s (1990) neutralisation hypothesis according to which the auditory trace left by the first vowel in a pair decays toward a central point in the acoustic space, triggering order effects in perception. Two ‘same-different’ tasks were undertaken by French listeners. A prototype and four satellite tokens were synthesized for ten vowel categ...

Individual Differences in the Discrimination of Novel Speech Sounds: Effects of Sex, Temporal Processing, Musical and Cognitive Abilities

This study examined whether rapid temporal auditory processing, verbal working memory capacity, non-verbal intelligence, executive functioning, musical ability and prior foreign language experience predicted how well native English speakers (N=120) discriminated Norwegian tonal and vowel contrasts as well as a non-speech analogue of the tonal contrast and a native vowel contrast presented over ...
